You’re so excited about your Big Day, and planning the event is loads of fun, but don’t overlook the practical matters that need to be addressed, or you could end up ruining the wedding of your dreams. No worrieswe’ve thought of some of the most important things you’ll need to keep in mind when planning your wedding, so you’ll walk down the aisle without a care in the world.

Check your local calendar for major events.

You probably don’t want to scramble to find a place for all your friends and family to stay when they come into town for your wedding, but if there’s a big event going on in your area, there may be no hotel rooms to be had.

Parades, carnivals, festivals and even college graduations can all cause lots of traffic and a shortage of hotel rooms. Check the local calendar for any big events that might conflict with your wedding, then considering phoning the hotels in the area to see if they have any major conventions or parties planned for that time.

You don’t want your poor friends and family stuck in a hotel with a heavy metal music lover’s convention going on (unless they just love heavy metal, of course!).

Know the laws about your wedding license.

In some states, it can take longer than others to receive your wedding license, AKA, your legal right to be married. It would be a shame to have all your guests show up to a wedding that really wasn’t legal, wouldn’t it?

Confirm the local licensing statutes, and get your marriage license as early as you can so you will be legally taking on your new last name.

Speaking of new last names…

Don’t even think of booking your honeymoon in your new married name, unless you are willing to put it off for several days or even weeks. This is because getting your new passport and social security card can take this long to receive. Book in your maiden name to avoid any confusion or hassles with your travel arrangements. After all, you’ll have plenty of time to practice using your new last name once the honeymoon’s over!

Sort out your vendor payments before the big day.

When you book a venue, hire a caterer, or organize a wedding DJ, know exactly what is going to be included in the cost before your wedding day. You don’t want to be scrabbling for your credit card to pay for services that you thought were included, but which actually weren’t.

Sort out your payment arrangements well in advance of your wedding day. Your vendors will be happier to provide extra great service if they have already been paid in full before they arrive. Be sure to get receipts and written contracts for EVERYTHING, so that you will have them to rely on should you receive poor service from any of your vendors.

Keep these practical tips in mind when planning your wedding, and everything will go much more smoothly.
