How To Make Your Own Floam At Home

make your own floamIf you’ve ever seen ‘Floam’ in stores, you’ll know it’s a fun toy that can keep the kids occupied for hours. The cross between slime and clay is great for shaping into all sorts of things, and it can be reused again and again.

Here’s how you can make your own Floam at home.

What you’ll need:

2 teaspoons of Borax
Water
White glue
Polystyrene beads (found in craft shops, the kind you use in bean bag chairs)
Food colouring
Resealable plastic bag

mix ingredients

If you can’t find polystyrene beads, or if you want to be kind to the environment, use grated Styrofoam instead. It works just as well, and uses up the stuff that would only sit in the landfill forever.

In a bowl, dissolve 2 teaspoons of powdered Borax in 1/2 cup of warm water.

In a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup of white glue with 1/4 cup of water. Mix well, and add food colouring if you want coloured floam.

Pour the glue mixture into a resealable plastic bag, and add a cup and a half of polystyrene beads or Styrofoam.

Add the Borax solution and seal the bag. Knead the mixture until it is fully mixed, and the Floam has formed. When there is little or no liquid left, and you have a fairly solid mass, the Floam is ready.

Use it to make fun shapes and sculptures, then put it back in the plastic bag when you’re done. You can reuse it, and mix different colours together to create rainbow floam.

This also makes a fun gift to give out in party bags at children’s birthday parties. Make up some Floam for your own kids, and they’ll thank you for it!
